Welcome,

Sheriff Phil R. Stammitti and his staff welcome you to the Lorain County Sheriff's Office website.

Founded in 1822, Lorain County is the fifth largest county in the state spanning 495 square miles with a population of 279,876.  Located on the shore of Lake Erie, Lorain County is about 25 minutes west of downtown Cleveland, Ohio.

The Sheriff's Office is located at 9896 Murray Ridge Road in Elyria, Ohio and is staffed with approximately 250 employees and has a yearly budget of approximately $16 million.

By law, the Sheriff's Office has charge of the jail, maintains a secure court system, transports thousands of prisoners each year to and from state institutions, holding facilities, courts, and handles extraditions from other states. The 24 hour-a-day full service correctional facility houses up to 422 male and female inmates.

Your Sheriff's Office also provides law enforcement services which patrol 357 square miles where about 61,000 people reside. For faster operations, officers have access to  6 strategically placed sub-stations throughout the county which were constructed by the providing Townships. The officers use these stations to write reports, conduct interviews and conduct investigation follow ups. Deputies also provide security, and crowd control for special events such as county fairs and sporting events.

The Sheriff's Office is primarily responsible for the service of legal documents in the State. This includes summons and subpoenas. The Sheriffs Office also handles evictions, repossessions, and seizure/sale of property as ordered by the court.

The Sheriff's Office is responsible for maintaining the registry for all sex offenders residing in the county and are required to verify each address and handle neighborhood predator notifications.

The Sheriff's Office operates and maintains a 24 hour-a-day dispatch center that provides dispatch services for other agencies such as police, fire departments and volunteer ambulance associations.
