What is the Sheriff's Auxiliary?
The Lorain County Sheriff's Auxiliary was created in 1957 to
provide a group of trained, informed volunteers who could be called
upon during emergency situations or in the event of a disaster. Todays
Sheriff's Auxiliary has evolved into a multi-task oriented program
whose success relies in the commitment and unique skills offered by community-minded individuals.
For citizens who wish to experience police work through active involvement
with the Lorain County Sheriff's Auxiliary, we offer opportunities for citizens to become an integral part of the Sheriff's organization. The Sheriff's Auxiliary
has proven to be a dedicated and efficient volunteer organization.
Who May Qualify?
Applicants must
be at least 19 years of age, a U.S. Citizen, be able to read and
write the English language, possess a valid Ohio drivers license, be
in good general mental and physical condition, and of good moral
character. Any felony conviction is disqualifying and misdemeanors
and traffic records will be closely scrutinized and may be
disqualifying. A high school diploma or GED is required.
What Does an Auxiliary Deputy Do?
Volunteer officers perform a wide variety of
duties, both at the Sheriff's Office and for special events in the
community. Auxiliary officers participate in parades, Police Week displays, other events promoting crime prevention,
assist with regular patrol with Deputies or assist Corrections
officers in the jail as well as being called out for emergency or civil disasters. The Auxiliary provides security for civic events and raises money through donations. Each year, members of this team provide the citizens of Lorain County with more than 19,000 volunteer hours and their efforts contribute to the excellent quality of life in our county.
Is Training Provided?
Once accepted, applicants must attend the
auxiliary police academy that lasts approximately 3 months, with classes on two
weeknights from 6 pm to 10 pm. Academy training consists of classroom
instruction on such topics as the law, first aid, crime scene preservation,
traffic control as well as self defense methods, and firearms qualification.
Although Auxiliary members are not issued firearms, they must be capable of
handling them in unusual or critical circumstances.
What is the Cost?
The Auxiliary Deputies purchase their own uniforms and duty belt as prescribed
by the Sheriff's Office.
