Sheriffs Office will convert to Video Visitation on April 11th
As visitors to friends
and family members who are currently incarcerated at the Lorain County
Jail, we're sure that you have noticed some changes in the visitation areas
over the past several weeks.
Effective Monday, April 11th, 2005
changes in the Visitation System will take effect. All visitations will
be through the use of Video Visitation. We anticipate that
there will be delays and problems that will arise and some confusion with
the implementation of this new system. We ask for your patience and
understanding during this transition and we will correct any errors and
solve any problems as soon as possible. We’re confident that the end result will be a Visitation
System that will be more efficient, less restrictive and allow for more
flexibility for friends and family members who come to visit their friends or
family members that are incarcerated. We don’t expect that everyone will like
the new system. We would ask that before you come to your own conclusion that
you give the system a fair chance before you voice your complaints or concerns.
Please keep in mind that the staff that checks you in for your
visit were not the people responsible for this change in the system. So in
other words, if your not completely pleased with the system, I ask that you not
vent your frustrations at them, as they had no role in the decision making
process that has lead us to this change. If you have concerns or comments, you can make them known
through written communication to the Attention of Lt. J. Hammond, 9896 Murray
Ridge Rd., Elyria, Ohio, 44035. While your concerns will be looked into and
addressed where appropriate, please understand this, the likelihood of ever
returning to a system of visitation like or similar to the one that was used in
the past, is extremely doubtful and even more remote. Although it may take
sometime to adjust to the new system and correct the problems that may arise,
the transition will be accomplished with the desired result. Our guidelines for visitation must comply with the State of Ohio, Minimum Standards for Full Service Jails. Based on these standards, we must allow for at least thirty (30) minutes of visitation time each week. While some areas of the Jail in the past were given the opportunity for two (2) thirty (30) minute visits each week, with the implementation of the new visitation system, all inmates will be given the opportunity for one (1) thirty (30) minute visit each week. Once the system has been used for a period of time that we believe affords all opportunity for problems to surface and be corrected, we will then consider expanding the one (1) visit per week to one (1) hour. Video Visitation, It’s the wave of the future. While the Lorain County Sheriff’s Office will be one of a few jails in Ohio to implement Video Visitation, it’s use is growing nation wide. Facilities that are already using video visitation report that it has made the visitation process much more friendly and easy for visitors to their jails. Advancement in technology will continue to allow us to offer better service, now and in the future.
